brief overview of the beginning steps of a new type of school in Bulgaria at the time of the Bulgarian Renaissance. Attention is given to the need for an outline of what we know about the teaching of foreign languages especially after the decade of the fi fties in the nineteenth century. For that reason we pay attention to the undertakings of Sava Filaretov and the well-known donor and benefactor Ivan Denkoglu \u2013 founders of Sofi a\u2019s graded public school, offering instruction in Western languages and exact sciences; it thus was a true gift to the people of Sofi a, which brought them up to a European level of education and set the example for a pragmatic and reasonable way of helping to bring about public education. The Sofia public school was of a democratic and innovative type. It was through the important contributions of Saba Filaretov that the teaching of French was introduced in Sofi a. As early as 1857 \u2013 during the fi rst year of its existence \u2013 he began to teach French, whichhe had mastered during his stay and study in Russia.
